During the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada announced a temporary public policy to help international graduates extend their Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). The initiation was highly appreciated by the student community. Canadian immigration minister had re-introduced this policy, offering graduates to apply for an additional open work permit so that they can extend their status in Canada in 2021 as a response to the after-effects of COVID-19 on the Canadian labour market.

Again in 2022, the Canadian Government will re-introduce the same policy to help former international students who are in Canada. Regarding the expiration of PGWP between January to December in 2022, students will be able to qualify for the next 18 months to work in the Canadian market.

The intention of the Canadian Government behind this PGWP extension is to offer more opportunities to the students who have graduated from Canadian institutions. It will enable them to gain work experience that may get qualified for permanent residence in Canada etc.

According to the recent announcement, roughly 95,000 post-graduation work permits will expire between 31 January and 31 December 2022, and this PGWP extension will benefit more than 50,000 applicants. It is because thousands of students already have permanent work permits in Canada, and the remaining will also get this opportunity.

In a recent interview, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser declared that he intends to offer flexibility to international students by considering their studies as a “springboard” to permanent residency. It is simply a step towards settling the international students in Canada as permanent settlers.
